The modern hologram. Art, or Science, or perhaps both?

The Hologram> Art & Science

Holography can be considered as both art and science.

The techniques for producing holograms without doubt involve the use of sophisticated scientific equipment and a knowledge and understanding of the physics behind it, as well as a large degree of precision in the way the hologram is shot. However, there is as much art in the process of shooting a hologram, as there is science.

To turn an image from simply an accurate ‘scientific recording’ into a creative and visually exciting piece, that people will want to look at not just once but time and time again, requires significant artistic input. The subject, just as in a painting, needs to be interpreted. The key to this is realising the mediums potential as well as its limitations. The problem with holography is that due to its technical complexities, it can take many years to reach a point where you are essentially in control of the medium.

In the past, scientists have produced technically impressive holograms of 3D objects, unfortunately however with little artistic input. And artists have produced very creative holograms which have been let down by the technical limitations of the individual. In the mid nineties this led to a serious decline in interest, after the novelty and wow factor of holography had worn off.

Today, we are able to combine art and science, to create images that people will remember, and enjoy viewing.
