Notes on Choosing a suitable Subject for your hologram:
Most important of all, the subject matter needs to be solid and stable. The exposure times for a traditional photograph are normally around a fraction of a second. However holography requires much longer exposure times, typically over one minute. If the object moves more than a gnat’s whisker during that time the hologram is completely destroyed.
Any organic material such as wood, leaves or fruit have living cell tissue which moves too much. Anything light in weight, very flexible or liable to move around with air currents, such as paper or card, will also cause the hologram structure to be irreversibly damaged.
Solid materials such as metal, marble, plaster, resin, clay, rocks, minerals, glass and plastic as well as many others, work well for holograms.
The colour of your subject is also important. Your hologram will be made using a red laser, so an object with a significant content of red, orange, yellow or white should enable a bright hologram to be made. Green and blue will look dim but small areas of these colours should be no problem. In fact, in some situations they can serve to enhance the contrast.
To get some ideas take a look at examples of these holograms, together with photos of the original objects.
